Serving as a launch title for the Nintendo Gamecube, Rogue Leader‘s big attraction was reenacting A New Hope‘s trench run and Death Star fight. Rogue Squadron‘s mix of Star Wars lore, strong representation of fan-favourite Star Wars characters and amazing controls paved the way for Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader (2001).

For the 90s PC kids in the audience, the PC release of Rogue Squadron (dubbed Rogue Squadron 3D) was groundbreaking at the time. This was also the first venture for the genre on home consoles, starting with the Nintendo 64 and PC in 1998.

The next series of games which stand out as definitive Star Wars space-fighting titles is the Rogue Squadron series. Featuring up to eight-player CO-OP and a slew of improvements on the already advanced TIE Fighter mechanics, this title was an important title in the history of Star Wars Dog Fighting titles. TIE Fighter (1997) built on the TIE Fighter formula by requiring a Joystick to play, any other control input at the time wouldn’t have felt right anyway. Featuring some amazing mechanics for the time which properly utilized the axes of joysticks such as the ‘Microsoft Sidewinder’, TIE Fighter is a memorable product of nostalgia and control precision. For many, this was the first and most memorable experience of space dog-fighting. Rolling the years back to the age of PC Joysticks, one can’t mention a space fighting Star Wars title without the critically acclaimed Star Wars: TIE Fighter (1994). Maybe someone at EA thought the same as me? With fluent controls and online match-ups, Battlefront dogfighting was a fun experience which, for me, stood apart from the main game. Starting with Battlefront II, EA’s latest space fighting outing, Battlefront I and II brought a much-loved part of Star Wars gaming history into the HD era. Now is probably the best time to look over some of the best Star Wars Dogfighting games across the years. Following Classics – TIE Fighting Through the Generations Judging on the looks of the original trilogy ships/pilot garb, I have my suspicions that Squadrons will be taking place after the events of Return of the Jedi but before the emergence of the First Order. It looks like Star Wars: Squadrons is going to be a 5v5 Space Dog Fighting game, hopefully with some kind of story that is based on the new republic. Well, we don’t really know much at this point. Is this a definitive alternative for Star Wars fans all over the galaxy? Star Wars and Space Dog Fighting fans haven’t seen a stand-alone X-Wing / Tie Fighter sim since the Nintendo Gamecube’s ‘Rogue Squadron III’. A brief reaction of my hype can be found here. Note: The trainer works with the Steam version of STAR WARS: Rogue Squadron 3D only.In case any of our readers were living under a rock this evening, EA and Mobius dropped a cinematic trailer for Star Wars: Squadrons. As such, you can easily activate the unlimited lives cheat and not worry about death anymore, as well as take advantage of infinite missiles if you do not want to run out of ammunition at any point. In case everything seems too difficult for you, this trainer can lend a helping hand and make it a lot easier to complete missions. Even so, it really depends on how strong your nostalgia is, because you can easily get over this aspect if you are having fun. The graphics are nothing to write home about nowadays, and they haven't aged very well, given the fact that everything is in 3D and there's no way to change the resolution to fit modern screens.

On top of it all, you get to fight against many famous ships from the movie series, plus a few ground vehicles like the great AT-ATs. Naturally, everything about the game is arcade, including the physics and the controls, but the main idea is to have fun and kill as many bad guys as possible.
Hence, you get to control a variety of fighter ships, including X-fighters and Y-fighters, each one of which has its own personality and various special abilities that make the experience feel unique. In short, the action revolves around Luke Skywalker and his squadron of fighters as they take on the evil Empire once again, this time with a lot more anger. However, it's difficult to get into it if you are not familiar with the original, because this version does not bring any graphic or gameplay improvements. STAR WARS: Rogue Squadron 3D is a retro game that was brought to PC a few years ago in order to make the old fans happy and remove the need of an emulator, which is a pretty nice move on behalf of the publishers.
